One Subsea (Leeds) – Background and Requirement

OneSubsea (a Schlumberger Company) creates integrated solutions, products, systems and services for the subsea oil and gas market. A downturn in the global oil and gas industry has led to a ceasing of operations and restructuring of the business to Systems Tendering and Engineering at their Leeds factory. Around 401 operations and support staff were affected and there was a phased release of staff from Q2 2017.

OneSubsea engaged Alan Smith & Associates Limited (asa) to support staff through a significant period of change and to provide outplacement assistance to those employees who would be leaving the organisation.

asa Recommendation and Solution

In close consultation with the senior management team at a Leadership Meeting at OneSubsea our recommendation was to provide the following support;

> Briefings to Staff

The announcement to staff was made on 5 October 2016 and asa provided career coaches on site for those employees wishing to have immediate support.

Briefings to staff were held in the week following the end of the consultation period and comprised;

  •  Theory and practice of career transition
  •  Overview of the outplacement programmes of support
  •  Details of the on-site career centre
  •  Q&A

> Change Management Workshops

To support retention and motivation through a period of significant change at the plant at what was to be a protracted closure of the manufacturing site, all staff attended a change management workshop.
In addition, workshops were run for managers entitled ‘Leading Through Change’ which gave Clarity about their role as a leader during change. A total of 690 employees attended a change management workshop and gave an average satisfaction rating of 92%.

> Career Centre

A career centre was opened on site on 9 January 2017 to support the 381 employees affected by the restructuring. The centre offered dedicated administrative support, 1:1 career coaching sessions, PCs with access to the asa on line information/research/job search site, displayed job vacancies and a location for people to focus on their career transition.

> 1:1 Coaching Sessions

> Job Fairs

We held 3 x Job Fairs on site to support the outplacement project. A total of 53 companies from the local area in Leeds attended the job fairs and a significant number of jobs were successfully secured with these companies.

The support provided by the QSQ team was useful and practical in helping me construct my Cv, apply for jobs, prepare for interview and move on. I am not sure I could have done it all on my own. Thank you for the assistance.

My new role is going well, the support provided by asa helped in the smooth transition of what was a difficult time.

David Thomas

Mike, thank you for all your help in putting together my Cv, also in assisting me with the two job applications and interview techniques, one of which I got offered. I would like to personally thank you and all the team for all the help and advice given out in seminars, workshops and 1:1 support.

Martyn Rayner

Engineering Stores

I think the outplacement service provided by asa is fantastic and helped me greatly with my job searching and interview preparation. The extra support provided in time of redundancy is a must for all businesses.

Paul Stevenson

CNC Setter Operator

asa (David Hardy) helped me to restructure my Curriculum Vitae to make it more appealing to prospective employers. I was advised to re-write my ‘personal profile’, and include a section based on ‘key skills’ and also break down the ‘core components’ of my role at OneSubsea. My CV looks much more professional and I have used this to improve my Linkedln profile.

On a personal level I feel the guys at asa are not only very knowledgeable but also very genuine people who are always willing to help.

Mike Unwin

Project Quality Engineer

My experience of working with Mike was exceptional. His experience and advice was invaluable in constructing my CV and when attending interviews. I would recommend him and asa to anyone looking for a role, especially in Engineering.
